Good Morning: A Haiku

Good MorningEskimo Kisses by jamie Solorio

This morning he woke
me with Inuit kisses
saying, “Hi mama.”

Here is my first Hump Day Haiku, and also a true story. My two and a half year old son greeted me awake the other morning by rubbing my nose with his. I know calling the act of rubbing noses Eskimo kisses isn’t politically correct and is in actuality offensive, so I’ve changed it to Inuit, which incidentally has the same number of syllables as Eskimo.

Based loosely on an actual Inuit greeting called a kunik, the rubbing of noses isn’t what we think it is. Inuit mothers and children greet on another by nuzzling and sniffing. This may sound strange to some, but I love the way my child smells, and I think most moms would agree with me. Our babies, and they’re always babies to us, smell wonderful. Unless they have a dirty diaper, but that’s another story.
