Writing Q&A with Jason Howell

Shame, self loathing, conditioning, www.Built4Love.com

The Setup

Recently, I was asked to answer a question on malicious criticism for the Q&A website Howlarium, run by writer and shit-stirrer Jason Howell. The question concerned dealing with and overcoming someone close to you mocking your writing. Not just criticizing, but actively trying to hurt you through your creative endeavors. Fortunately for Jason, and unfortunately for me, I had something to say on the subject.

The Rub

From reading what other writers had to contribute on the subject, there seems to be a systemic problem of mental abuse from parents, partners, and professors regarding tearing people’s work to shreds, either out of jealousy or through a lack of empathy.

If you are ever put into the situation where someone is asking you what you think of something, don’t flippantly answer. Instead give the piece, regardless as to what it may be (poem or short story, painting, or homemade recipe), along with the person the thoughtful respect and consideration they deserve. This goes doubly if you are dealing with a child. Life is hard enough without having someone we look up to trashing something we’ve thrown our heart into.

I invite you to check out the responses to Jason Howell’s question on his site, Howlarium.
